Bad Mitterndorf, winter and summer paradise

Located in the centre of Austria, in between the Dachstein massif and the Totes Gebirge lies the area of Ausseerland-Salzkammergut. In the south of this magnificent nature reserve lies the cosy town of Bad Mitterndorf right next to the Tauplitzalm.

Even just on the way there, the magnificent, varied nature the area has to offer will surprise you. Bad Mitterndorf is fabulously situated in imposing mountainous surroundings. The many beautiful lakes of the Salzkammergut are located nearby. You can take interesting daytrips to, for example, festival town Salzburg that is easily accessible and located a mere 95 km away.

The fabulous Tauplitzalm ski resort is just as beautiful as the extensive cross country skiing trails in the valley below. Bad Mitterndorf with its healing mineral baths and health centres has been a spa town since 1972.

Winter activities

Bad Mitterndorf is an excellent venue for a winter sports holiday. It is situated only 2 kilometres from Tauplitzalm ski resort. Bad Mitterndorf’s surrounding area is also home to very extensive cross country skiing trails. Skis can be hired locally and there are plenty of skiing schools for both beginners and advanced skiers. Ski jumping courses are also an option.

A free skiing shuttle to the slopes stops a mere 2-minute walk from the apartment. Bad Mitterndorf also features fun après-ski nightlife options.

Activities other than skiing include a local skating rink and less active winter visitors can take a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh through Bad Mitterndorf’s enchanting surrounding area or spend a tremendously exciting evening learning to luge! You can also spend the day at the spa’s indoor swimming pool or spend time in the sauna. There are also an indoor squash court, tennis courts and a climbing wall located nearby.

Summer activities

There is also plenty to do in and around Bad Mitterndorf during the summer months. The beautiful surroundings provide plenty of recreational opportunities. There are, for example, countless interesting cycling routes as well as beautiful mountain lakes that provide sunbathing and boating opportunities. You can go for great walks in the mountains and there are also a host of excursions available.

Equestrian enthusiasts will love the local riding stables (Dutch spoken). Are you more adventurous? Adventure park Gröbming is located nearby. Golf is also an option. And to gain a panoramic view you can take one of the ski lifts that also operate during the summer.

A heated outdoor pool is situated really near to the complex as are a playground, a midget golf centre and tennis facilities. Music lovers can attend one of the many outdoor concerts organised at the local recreation ground. Plenty of options in other words!

Next to Bad Mitterndorf lies the town of Bad Aussee which is home to many exquisitely preserved listed buildings and statues. Bad Aussee provides a view of Loser mountain which is 1,883 metres high. The Panoramastrasse there leads to a restaurant located 1,600 metres up which is also a great place to start a walk to, for example, the Augtsee, a mountain lake. There is also an Alpine flower garden there that features 400 species of Alpine flower.

Another town in the area is Bad Ischl which was an imperial spa. Almost all the former emperors went there to take a ‘cure’, even Prince Franz Joseph. There is a music museum along the river Traun. There is also a municipal museum and guided tours are provided of the Kaiservilla the summer residence of Queen Elisabeth (Sissi). You can also take the gondola to Hainzen mountain (1,639 metres) where you can take a walk over to the Ahornfeldhütte.
